BioPhysical Profile Ultrasound

A physician or midwife referral or order is required prior to beginning this type of ultrasound.

These types of ultrasounds are performed on fetuses in the third trimester (usually after 26 weeks pregnant).

Biophysical profiles are a fetal wellbeing assessment that checks that status of the baby by evaluating fetal movement, fetal tone, breathing, amniotic fluid volume, the placenta and fetal position.

There is a possible 8/8 points a baby can receive during this assessment.

2 points = Fetal movement

2 points = Fetal tone (flexing or extending a leg or arm)

2 points= Fetal breathing (movement of the diaphragm for over 30 seconds)

2 points = Amniotic fluid volume

Depending on the outcome of this assessment will determine whether the mom and baby will need closer surveillance, a NST test or possible early delivery.

This ultrasound will be interpreted by a licensed physician and your doctor made aware of the findings immediately after your exam.

Prep:

Sometimes we will ask that you drink something sugar or caffeinated prior to doing your ultrasound. However, we do want to assess the baby in its natural state so eat or drink as you normally would during your pregnancy.

You do not need a full bladder for this study.
